The Population Is Concentrated In The Southern State Of Oaxaca. Teotitlan Del Valle, Founded In 1465, Is A Small Village Located In The East Of The Valles Centrales Region About 31 Km From The City Of Oaxaca In The Foothills Of The Sierra Juarez Mountains. The Community Is Famous Worldwide For Its Weaving Of Rugs (tapetes In Spanish And ?laadi? In The Local Language). About 150 Families Are Involved In The Craft. These Rugs Are Woven On Hand-operated Looms From High Quality Wool Obtained From Local Sheep (both Introduced By A Dominican Bishop In 1535). Their Textiles Are Dyed Mainly With Local Natural Pigments, Such As Those Obtained From The Needle Bush, Indigo, Cochineal Insect, Musgo Deroca, Brazilwood, Mexican Marigold, Seedpods, Mosses, Pecans, Pomegranate, Minerals And Others. The Lanolin In The Sheep’s Wool Makes The Threads Smooth And Very Resistant. The Zapotec Weaving Tradition Has Been Passed Down For Generations Since Pre-Columbian Times. Most Of Their Weavings Are Done In Native Indigenous Motifs, With Particular Tribute To The Aztecs. Most Designs Come From The Weaver’s Memory, And Include Zapotec And Mixtec Glyphs And Fretwork (lightning, Sun, Natural Star, Diamonds, Rainfall, Maize, Mountains, Birds, Trees, Rivers, To Name Just A Few). Navajo Designs Are Made Too (although A Contentious Issue Locally). Model – WH2774ba07a31ff536
